Les Journées européennes du patrimoine se tiennent cette année le samedi 19 et dimanche 20 septembre 2026. Chaque année à la même période, monuments et sites habituellement fermés au public ou payants ouvrent leurs portes gratuitement le temps d'un week-end. L'occasion parfaite pour prolonger votre séjour en Périgord Vert d'une note plus culturelle : depuis notre manoir historique où vous logez, partez à la découverte des trésors patrimoniaux des environs de Thiviers.

This year's European Heritage Days take place on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2026. Every year around this time, monuments and sites that are usually closed to the public or require an entrance fee open their doors for free for the weekend. It's the perfect opportunity to add a cultural note to your stay in Périgord Vert: from our historic manor where you'll be staying, set off to discover the heritage treasures around Thiviers.

Si vous séjournez chez nous ce week-end-là, le voyage dans l'histoire commence dès votre arrivée : La Fontaine du Mas occupe elle-même un manoir édifié au XVIIe siècle, qui fut la demeure de l'ancien régisseur des quatre châteaux de Thiviers (l'intendant chargé d'administrer les domaines pour le compte du seigneur). Ses murs de pierre épais, qui gardent la fraîcheur en été et la douceur en hiver, racontent à eux seuls plusieurs siècles d'histoire locale. Le manoir n'est pas ouvert à la visite pour le public en dehors des séjours, mais nous serons ravis de partager avec vous, nos hôtes, ce que nous savons de son passé.

If you're staying with us that weekend, the journey into history starts the moment you arrive: La Fontaine du Mas is itself a manor built in the 17th century, once home to the former steward of Thiviers' four châteaux (the person responsible for managing the estates on the lord's behalf). Its thick stone walls, which keep the house cool in summer and cosy in winter, tell several centuries of local history on their own. The manor isn't open to the public for visits outside of stays, but we're always happy to share what we know of its past with our guests.

À seulement 10 minutes de La Fontaine du Mas, Saint-Jean-de-Côle, classé parmi les Plus Beaux Villages de France, s'articule autour du Château de la Marthonie, de son abbaye du XIIe siècle et de l'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Un ensemble architectural rare, à parcourir à pied au fil de ses ruelles et de son vieux pont en pierre sur la Côle, d'autant plus agréable un week-end de patrimoine, quand certains lieux ouvrent exceptionnellement leurs portes.

Just 10 minutes from La Fontaine du Mas, Saint-Jean-de-Côle, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, is built around the Château de la Marthonie, its 12th-century abbey and the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste. A rare architectural ensemble, best explored on foot through its lanes and over its old stone bridge on the Côle, all the more rewarding on a heritage weekend, when some sites open specially to the public.

Pour une immersion patrimoniale plus large, Périgueux est à environ 30 minutes de route. La ville conserve l'une des plus belles concentrations de vestiges antiques du pays autour de l'ancienne cité romaine de Vesunna (amphithéâtre, tour de Vésone, musée Vesunna conçu par Jean Nouvel), ainsi que la spectaculaire cathédrale Saint-Front, classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO sur le chemin de Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle. Le quartier médiéval du Puy-Saint-Front, avec ses ruelles pavées et ses façades Renaissance, se prête particulièrement bien à une flânerie sans carte.

For a deeper dive into heritage, Périgueux is about 30 minutes away by car. The city holds one of the finest concentrations of ancient remains in France, around the former Roman city of Vesunna (amphitheatre, Vésone tower, the Vesunna museum designed by Jean Nouvel), as well as the spectacular Saint-Front Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The medieval Puy-Saint-Front quarter, with its cobbled lanes and Renaissance façades, is perfect for wandering without a map.

• Ce week-end attire du monde sur les sites les plus connus (Périgueux notamment) : privilégiez une arrivée matinale.
• This weekend draws crowds to the best-known sites (Périgueux in particular): an early start is a good idea.
• Saint-Jean-de-Côle se visite très agréablement à vélo depuis La Fontaine du Mas, via la Flow Vélo (environ 25 minutes), voir notre article dédié pour préparer votre étape.
